The History of the Australian Cafe
Australia is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Most known for their vast choice of wine and massive vineyards, Australian visitors sometimes find it amazing to see a cafe on every corner. But, how did the cafe hit Australia with such a boom.
In 1947, nearly free passage was set up for Italian immigrants into Australia. With these immigrants, the popularity of espressos entered the every day life of many Australians. For the first few years, coffee was just coffee, but with the luck of the draw that all changed.
The Olympics were housed in Melbourne, Australia in 1956. The Italian community immediately took note of the Italian Olympic team that would be entering and staying within the country. With an entrepreneurs heart and a lot of patience the cafe was born and life has never been the same again.
The key to the Australian cafes is in the coffee. These cafes, built on the hearts of Italians, only serve espresso. Espresso is the drink of choice for Italians who would have their coffee no other way. Outside of Italy, these cafes in Australia are among the few who remain espresso only bars.
It took a heritage of people born outside of Australia, to bring a new and flourishing business into the country. With a nearly free immigration pass and a whole lot of spirit, the Italian community turned Melbourne into “coffee city”.
Compared to other countries, the espresso served in Australia, to some, is not on the plane with Italian espressos. But, don't count out the Australian cafes. At the their heart is a culture that does not know how to quit and a coffee that changed the face of a nation. One sip at a time, the Australian espresso is all Italian, no matter what some people may think.
